Thank You Otakon.: HE FINALLY REPLIES!! -_-

Journal Entry: Tue Jun 2, 2009, 12:28 PM
Update 6-2-09: Alley guy replies:

Hello Dan,

Unfortunately, there is so little time to work with at the moment, and so many people who wanted tables, that if I couldn't get a hold of you easily then you were passed over. I simply did not have time to try to track people down.

***
The Alley at Otakon, Department Head

there's little time to work with? who waited till the last minute??? moreover why..WHY..do you ask for alternate means of contact if you won't fucking use them??? it's as time consuming as picking up a damn fone and calling me....or just re-sending an email. this is the competence that is running the alley this year....

UPDATE:

My email works. It's apparently always worked. :iconluciole: sent me a test email earlier. it never bounced back to her, i just received it late. me thinks this guy mistyped my email and I'm being penalised for his error. oh boy!

Year after year with these people it's just getting too much to deal with their incompetence.

Otakon is July 17th. We don't get any heads up about the alley opening until one night that was 3 days before Memorial day weekend. Now, that weekend there were 5 large conventions going on in Boston, San Jose, Charlotte, Toronto, and ...somewhere... not to mention Balticon and Jacon (two smaller cons). The opening spread via word of mouth.

So I fill out the form. We hear nothing for a week or so till there's this small post on the forums that emails will go out on the 27th. That day arrives and nobody gets emails till about 11pm.

Well most everyone got an email. I did not. no email, no confirmation, rejection, etc.

I email this guy back and i don't hear from him for another 3 days. I finally got a reply out of him today that read:

"Hello Dan,

The email that you gave me bounced, so you were removed from the list. I can add you to the waiting list, however.

*******
The Alley at Otakon, Department Head"

At this point I'm beyond words. We fill out a form that asks for other means of communication besides email. This guy has also been having "personal issues" he's been dealing with and it has been severely delaying our alley registration. it's also hard on the artists b/c we don't reserve hotels and such until we know if we're even in the damn con to begin with. and quite honestly if this fella can't handle the job, he needs to hand the reins over to someone that can.

So I reply to the alley director that I did, in fact, manage to communicate with him (obviously) using a working email and that he had my fone number as well as a physical address to get in touch with me. To bump me b/c my initial email was returned was not fair and I did get my form submitted in time to be on the list for a table....

"Hello ****

I am curious as to why I'm bumped down the list when I put in 2 other
means of contacting me (via fone or mail). Given my email is
apparently being affected by my host's DNS problems at the moment,
there were means of letting me know what was going on, I was not out
of contact by any means. I have the email confirming that I got my
information put down in time (8:37) to be in the running. It seems
rather unfair that a regrettable email failure was my one and only
saving grace as to whether or not I remain in the alley. After all,
I have followed up with you about this situation with a working email
(*******@gmail.com) . Is there any way this can be resolved?

I send the email...I get this as a reply:

"I am away for the next few days and will not be answering email. When I return, your email will be answered.

Thank you for your interest in The Alley at Otakon."

It's bad enough he's put off doing this job for so long, but now waits till it's time for us all to send in money and get tables to take a "vacation" REALLY? I'm sorry if there are personal issues in his life that are beyond his control, but the convention doesn't stop for us or anyone. As I stated: if you cannot do the job, someone else can. or, heaven forbid, you get assistants to help you!

This is my homecoming convention and it's becoming so stressful dealing with the people that run it and do not seem to care about the artists.

Anime Boston 09: Or I Miss the North

Journal Entry: Fri May 29, 2009, 2:03 AM
Oh I really do miss living up north. Right about Virginia is where I start feeling more at home. Passing through Baltimore makes me home sick, and it's always lovely to see NYC and New England again.

Let me make something clear that is most likely clear to anyone stepping foot on this page. I AM a western artist. I am not Japanese...I am not even Asian much to chagrin of a small populace here that thinks I'm an Asian...or even female... No if you've been by a con, you'll find out I'm as American as one could get. I was not raised on a culture that started a new revolution of comics or cartoons. I'm from a culture that gave birth to spark that influenced that big eyed , speed line laden, cute, shiny mess that is Anime and Manga styled art.

Why am I espousing this nonsense? Well at Anime Boston this year, not once, or twice, but at least 3 times I hear commentary from passers by that let loose gems like "this isn't anime" or "this is typical western art" or "this doesn't belong here". That last one especially gets my goat. You see, I'm quite damn proud of where I've come with my art. There are times I wish to tear my hair out or throw the wacom and pencils out in the garbage and make a bon fire and move on waiting for day jobs with the Mexicans down the street. It has yet to happen, obviously. Because, I look back from what I've come from. Middle and high school years of incredibly embarrassing attempts at thinking "OH BOY I'LL DRAW ANIME" and my college age years of thinking "OH BOY I CAN SELL DRAWINGS THAT LOOK LIKE ANIME". Well, fact is , unless you either move to Asia..and get lucky...or just happen to strike it even luckier to find a gig here in N. America, you're not going to make a great living with attempts at trying to draw anime style in the commercial art world. Please don't waste time point out examples to dispel this statement as I am aware of the few..and I do mean few.. exceptions. This isn't my hobby. I'm not wasting time trying to please an anime-only crowd. Believe me if someone gave me a great , full-time illustration gig, you can expect an extra table space at the cons because I won't be there.

Now mind you, I am not unhappy. But I do realise that my work stands out like a sore thumb. I've seen my prints of anime and game characters passed over by crowds and crowds of people , in favour of shiny, and sometimes lesser quality anime work. Look, more power to those who do it. But I'm not going back. Until there's a new calling in life or there's a change in direction, you can expect my fat western posterior taking up a convention table to attempt to sell my western looking art. :)

A big thank you to my girlfriend, hotel mates, friends, and customers, and new faces I met.

Polls and Trolls

Journal Entry: Wed May 6, 2009, 5:57 PM
[link] <---- so it starts here.
[link] <----- here's another winner

Ok , this is a good example of me wondering where people get so much free time that they feel the need to come on to another person's page and insult them. At first I give everyone the benefit of the doubt that maybe, just maybe, they're joking around. But when a joke goes a tad too far and insults start get thrown around ("fuck you" , "sicko" , etc) it's time to ask yourself....do I want to be here? I mean, if something challenges your morals or otherwise makes you cringe in some kind of objection, why would you stay around.

OR

If you have nothing better to do in life other than waste time to rile up people's emotions, do you think you're really living a life worth any merit?

Seriously, if the polls put you off, don't waste either of our time to go out of your way to look like an asshole. Maybe you have the time to waste. That's fine with me. But you know I'm not the most popular artist on this site. I don't make the best troll trophy for your portfolio of wasted time. Yknow, play along or go bug someone that's got at least a million page views.

Maybe someone understands these idiots more than me?
